Having been subjected recently to a cruise on Royal Caribbean, I have to say that Disney cruises are far nicer, and Disney just does things better. On Royal Caribbean, there was a constant push by the cruise line to get you to spend more money – on alcohol, art, jewelry and gambling primarily. You’ll see characters walking around and posing for photos, hear a constant Disney soundtrack, and be very much surrounded by Disney while dining. What’s interesting is that the Disney experience is a bit of a time warp.

I do have a shorter list of more realistic upgrades I'd love to see on Disney Magic in the coming years. Disney Magic, like the other Disney ships, has a movie theater where you can see first-run Disney movies. Since there is only one movie theater on Magic, it offers a smaller choice of movies than on the ships with two theaters, but it's still a nice selection. I enjoyed listening to a few songs in Keys after dinner a few nights.

Both cruise lines offer apps that are free to use while on the ships. Disney’s app allows for free messaging to others on the ship, while Royal Caribbean charges a nominal fee for that service (although they’ve recently been waiving that fee). Disney Cruise Line also offers complimentary iMessage access for all guests on the ships. These innovative kids clubs have some fantastic theming and activities, including Star Wars and Toy Story-themed areas.
Some of the drink-tasting classes that you book in advance can be a good value if you're a fan of the drink on offer and are interested in learning a little bit while you sip. These bars are a lot of fun and are not to be missed if you like live music or a nice drink at the end of the day. Keep an eye out in your app for when and where the happy hours are on board if you want to save a few dollars on your drinks. Some bars also offer a sommelier bin where you get a nice glass of wine at a discounted price — as long as you put the bartender in charge of choosing your drink. On a Disney cruise, the snacks and pastries you'll see in the coffee shop or kiosk are all included, but the specialty coffee will cost extra.
